About Shogi

Shogi, also known as Japanese Chess, is a two-player strategy game played on a 9x9 board where each side commands twenty pieces and races to checkmate the enemy king. Its signature drop rule lets captured pieces switch sides and return to the board, so the fighting never really stops.

With promotable pieces, powerful rooks and bishops, and king-sheltering castles, Shogi rewards both sharp attacks and careful defense. Black moves first, and the first player to trap the enemy king wins.

How to play Shogi

Shogi rules reward understanding each piece: gold and silver generals guard the king, knights and lances strike forward, and the rook and bishop drive most attacks. Reaching the opponent's three back ranks lets pieces promote into stronger forms.

The drop rule is the heart of Shogi. Captured pieces enter your hand and can be placed back onto the board as your own, subject to a few restrictions such as never doubling unpromoted pawns on a file and never dropping a pawn for immediate checkmate.

Improve by learning strategy

Strong Shogi strategy balances a fast attack with a safe king. Build a castle such as the Mino or Yagura, choose a Static Rook or Ranging Rook plan, and coordinate your generals with the rook and bishop.

Manage your pieces in hand carefully, time your drops to create threats, and promote at the right moment. Keep pressure on the enemy king and convert your initiative into a decisive checkmate before your opponent can counterattack.

Frequently Asked Questions

You win by checkmating the enemy king, meaning it is under attack and cannot escape capture on the next move. There is no stalemate in Shogi, so the game is decided almost entirely by checkmate. Protecting your own king in a castle while cornering your opponent's king is the heart of the game.
