Race for the Corners
Because the king wins only at a corner, open ranks and files leading toward a corner are golden. If the king reaches a line that threatens two different corners at once, he usually wins, since the attackers cannot block both in a single move. Defenders should engineer these double threats; attackers must keep the corner approaches sealed.
Do Not Rush the King
On the small 7x7 board the king is exposed the moment he leaves the centre, and the throne offers him no help once he steps off it. Keep the king sheltered behind his princes until a clear, defended lane toward a corner opens. A premature dash usually ends in a quick capture.
Seal the Provinces
As the attacker, your eight raiders are just enough to wall off all four corners if you spread them evenly. Place pieces on the approaches to each province rather than clustering on one side, and avoid leaving an entire quadrant open while you mass elsewhere.
Use Defenders Boldly
Only the king's safety decides the game, so a defending prince can attack, block, or even be sacrificed to clear a lane or win tempo. The king must stay cautious, but the princes can do the dangerous work of breaking the attacker's wall and escorting the king outward.
Exploit the Hostile Squares
The empty throne and the four corners act as hostile walls that help capture pieces pinned against them. Drive enemy soldiers next to these squares and pin them with a single piece. Equally, keep your own pieces from being trapped beside a corner or the throne.
