Breakthrough Strategy: Tips, Tactics & Openings

Breakthrough is a modern abstract strategy game invented by Dan Troyka in 2000 that won the 2001 8x8 Game Design Competition. Played on a chess board with two rows of pawns each, the goal is beautifully simple: be the first to march a single pawn across the board to your opponent's home row. Easy to learn in seconds, Breakthrough hides surprising tactical depth in its races, blockades, and sacrifices.

Defend in a Phalanx

Two pawns side by side defend each other diagonally. Keep your back ranks connected so that any pawn the opponent captures can be immediately recaptured. A solid wall is far harder to break than scattered, undefended pawns.

Count the Race

Breakthrough is often a race. Before committing to a charge, count how many moves you need to reach the goal versus how many your opponent needs on the other flank. If you are a tempo ahead, push hard; if you are behind, you must defend or attack faster.

Attack on the Edges

Edge files are dangerous because a pawn on the a or h file can only be defended from one side. Pressuring the flanks forces your opponent to spend defenders unevenly, and a single overloaded edge can open the path to a winning breakthrough.

Sacrifice to Break Through

A well-timed sacrifice can shatter a defense. Giving up one or two pawns to strip away the defenders guarding a key square is often worth it if it lets a trailing pawn run unopposed to the back row.

Do Not Overextend

An isolated pawn pushed deep into enemy territory is easily captured and gains nothing. Advance with support so your leading pawns are always backed up, and avoid weakening your own home row defense while chasing an attack.
