Reversi Strategy Tips
Reversi, also known as Othello, is a classic two-player abstract strategy board game. Flip your opponent's discs by trapping them between your own. The player with the most discs when the board is full wins. This timeless game combines simple rules with deep strategic possibilities.
Control the Corners
Corners are the most valuable squares on the board because they cannot be flipped once occupied. A disc in a corner is permanently yours for the rest of the game. Always look for opportunities to capture corners.
Avoid X-Squares Early
The squares diagonally adjacent to corners (called X-squares) are dangerous in the early game. Placing a disc there can give your opponent access to the corner. Only play on X-squares when you're certain your opponent cannot exploit them.
Maximize Mobility
Try to maintain more available moves than your opponent. Having more options gives you flexibility and control. A player with no valid moves must pass, potentially giving you multiple consecutive turns.
Build Stable Edges
Discs along the edges that connect to corners become stable (cannot be flipped). Focus on building connected chains of discs from corners along the edges to secure territory.
Don't Focus on Disc Count Early
In the early and middle game, having fewer discs can actually be advantageous. Fewer discs mean your opponent has fewer targets to outflank, giving you more mobility. Save the big flips for the endgame.
