Hnefatafl Strategy Tips

Hnefatafl (pronounced 'nef-ah-tah-fel') is an ancient Viking strategy game dating back to at least 400 AD. Often called 'Viking Chess', this asymmetric game pits a small defending force protecting their king against a larger attacking army. The defenders must help their king escape to a corner, while the attackers try to capture him.

Control the Corners

As attackers, position pieces near corners early to block escape routes. As defenders, keep paths to corners open and create diversions.

Use the King Wisely

The king is powerful - he can participate in captures and access restricted squares. Don't leave him passive in the center; use him actively to threaten escapes.

Create Forks

Position the king where he threatens multiple escape routes simultaneously. If attackers can only block one path, the king escapes via another.

Sacrifice for Position

Sometimes sacrificing a piece to open a path or create a distraction is worth it. Defenders have fewer pieces but need only one successful escape.

Watch the Edges

Edge squares are dangerous for both sides. Pieces on edges are easier to trap, but the king needs to reach the edge corners. Balance risk and reward.
