Gomoku Strategy Tips

Gomoku, meaning 'five points' in Japanese, is an elegant strategy game where two players compete to be the first to create an unbroken line of five stones. Played on a grid similar to Go, this game has been enjoyed in East Asia for centuries and combines accessibility with surprising strategic depth.

Build Open Fours

An 'open four' is four stones in a row with empty spaces on both ends. This is an unstoppable threat because your opponent can only block one end, guaranteeing your win on the next turn.

Create Double Threats

Position your stones to create two simultaneous threats (like two open threes). Your opponent can only block one, allowing you to complete the other. This 'fork' strategy is key to winning.

Control the Center

Stones near the center of the board have more potential directions for building lines. Opening near the center gives you more flexibility and options as the game develops.

Block Opponent's Threes

Always be aware of your opponent's open threes (three in a row with space to extend). An unblocked open three can quickly become an open four, which is undefendable.

Think Ahead

Every stone you place should serve multiple purposes: extending your own patterns while limiting your opponent's options. Passive, purely defensive play usually leads to losing.
