About Go

Go (also called Baduk or Weiqi) is a timeless territory control game where players place stones to build influence, capture groups, and secure points.

The game is usually played on a 19x19 board, but smaller boards are also common. Even on a 9×9 board, Go teaches the fundamentals: shape, life and death, and when to fight versus when to take the bigger area.

How to play Go

Players alternate placing stones on empty intersections. Stones do not move, but groups with no liberties are captured and removed.

You score territory plus captured stones (depending on ruleset). The 9×9 board is a great way to learn without the complexity of a full 19×19 game.

Improve by learning strategy

Good Go strategy balances local fights with global value. Do not overplay small gains if it costs you the biggest area on the board.

Learn to recognize strong shapes and weak shapes. If a group is thin, defend it before starting a new fight elsewhere.

Frequently Asked Questions

The 9x9 board is perfect for beginners and quick games, typically lasting 15-30 minutes instead of 1-2 hours. It teaches the same fundamental concepts as the full 19x19 board but with faster feedback. Many players start on 9x9 before progressing to 13x13 and eventually 19x19.
