Brazilian Draughts Strategy Tips
Brazilian Draughts is a popular 8×8 draughts variant known for its fast tactics. Men may capture both forward and backward, kings are flying (they move and capture across multiple squares), and captures are mandatory with the longest available capture sequence required. These rules create frequent combinations and decisive multi-captures.
Always count the longest capture
Because the longest capture is forced, tactics often begin with ‘What is the maximum capture available?’ Look for ways to offer your opponent a long capture that actually improves your position after the sequence completes.
Keep your formation flexible
Backward captures for men mean locked structures can collapse quickly. Avoid leaving single pieces unsupported on diagonals where they can be forced into bad jumps.
Value flying kings highly
A flying king can swing across the board and create multi-capture threats. Trading into a king endgame can be good if you can crown first or gain tempo.
Control long diagonals
Flying kings make open diagonals powerful. Try to keep key diagonals open for your own king while blocking the opponent’s access.
Create forcing sequences
Many positions are decided by forced capture lines. Practice spotting multi-jumps and ‘deflection’ sacrifices that force a piece to land on a vulnerable square.
