How to Play Brazilian Draughts

Brazilian Draughts is a popular 8×8 draughts variant known for its fast tactics. Men may capture both forward and backward, kings are flying (they move and capture across multiple squares), and captures are mandatory with the longest available capture sequence required. These rules create frequent combinations and decisive multi-captures.

Objective

Win by capturing all of your opponent’s pieces or leaving them with no legal moves. Captures are mandatory, and if multiple captures are available you must choose a sequence that captures the maximum number of pieces.

Setup

Brazilian Draughts is played on an 8×8 board using only the dark squares. Each player starts with 12 men placed on the dark squares of the three rows closest to them.

Gameplay

Men move diagonally forward one square to an adjacent empty dark square. To capture, a piece jumps diagonally over an adjacent opponent piece to an empty square beyond it, removing the jumped piece. Men may capture both forward and backward. Multiple captures in a single turn are possible and must be continued while captures remain available. When a man reaches the farthest row, it is crowned and becomes a King. Kings are flying: they move diagonally any number of empty squares, and when capturing they jump over an opponent piece and may land on any empty square beyond it on the same diagonal.

Winning

You win by capturing all opponent pieces or blocking them so they have no legal moves.
