American Checkers Strategy Tips

American Checkers (also called English Draughts) is the classic 8×8 form of checkers familiar to many players. Men move diagonally forward and capture forward only, kings move one square diagonally in any direction (short kings), and captures are mandatory when available. The simplicity of movement creates rich tactics and endgames.

Improve your pieces safely

Because men capture forward only, tempo and safe advances matter. Try to advance while keeping your pieces protected in pairs and chains.

Watch for forced captures

Captures are mandatory. Look for moves that force your opponent to capture into a poor square where you can reply with a multi-jump.

Protect your back row

Keeping a defender on the back row helps prevent your opponent from crowning a king too easily.

Trade when ahead

If you have a material advantage, simplify. Forced-capture tactics often allow clean trades that convert an advantage into a win.

Kings decide endgames

Short kings are still extremely valuable. Plan to crown first, and use kings to stop opposing men from promoting.
