Amazons Strategy Tips
The Game of the Amazons is a fascinating territory game invented in 1988 by Argentine game designer Walter Zamkauskas. Players control four amazons (queens) that move like chess queens, but after each move must shoot a 'fire arrow' that permanently blocks a square. The board gradually fills with blocked squares until one player cannot move.
Claim Territory Early
Use your early moves and arrows to section off large areas of the board. Territory you control exclusively is valuable because you can move freely while your opponent cannot enter.
Keep Your Amazons Together
Amazons that are isolated in small territories become trapped quickly. Try to maintain amazons with access to larger shared areas where they have room to maneuver.
Block Strategic Squares
Place arrows to restrict your opponent's mobility. Arrows near enemy amazons can trap them. Strategic arrow placement is as important as amazon movement.
Create Walls
Building chains of arrows can divide the board into regions. Try to divide the board so your amazons have more total squares than your opponent's amazons.
Think About the Endgame
As the board fills with arrows, mobility becomes critical. An amazon with 10 free squares will outlast one with only 5. Count available squares when evaluating positions.
